Then, inevitably I'd find that somewhere I'd entered a note that clashed with something in the guitar part, or that I'd made a timing error. If I were to adopt your workflow, I'd have to set aside Reaper, find another program that would allow me to write MIDI files for the individual 'tracks', save those files and import them into Reaper individually. It sounds OK, but I'm not happy with the bass, and I want change it to a synthesized bassline, to add some drums, keyboard pad and strings. I've recorded a couple of rhythm guitars, some tambourine, electric bass and my (horrible) vocals. Imagine if you will the following scenario.
Wouldn't the integration between MIDI and audio that you mentioned take place within Reaper once you imported the MIDI file from the external editor? I'm probably confused or missing vital info about your process though. Maybe I'm still missing something but what's wrong with writing the music in an external editor then exporting the data as a MIDI file then importing it into Reaper? If you're not composing real-time with a MIDI controller (keyboard) then where's the roadblock with this approach? A MIDI file created within Reaper or outside of Reaper is still a MIDI file. Gromit, it sounds like you have a very specific way that you like to create music and Reaper doesn't quite jive with it yet. Not so much for printing scores like finale or sibelius can do, but just for entering or editing midi data in that type of a view. so really what you and others still do want is a 'staff view' in the midi editor. Please don't think me overly grumpy, but every time I mention this I find myself having to defend the fact that some of us simply aren't keyboard players, and we need to enter our MIDI data in a more natural way.Ĭlearly understood and agreed with. I know that it is supposedly possible to set up an external MIDI editor, but there are two problems with that approach:ġ) It hardly ever seems to work reliably (and yes, I've tried - oh how I've tried)Ģ) It's pretty useless as you can only enter a single track, and you lose all integration with your other MIDI and audio tracks. I did say as much in my reply to your previous post. However, what I (and I suspect others) need is a means to enter MIDI data such as drum tracks, keyboard parts etc as well as audio in order to actually produce music.
I've used versions of both in the past, and they do their own job very well. If what I needed was music score production software, there'd be nothing wrong with any of those programs.
